At a Boordi – equipped museum visitors are guided to use ”Boordi Tour”. To take a Boordi Tour,

all that is needed is a mobile device with web browser and data connection. Besides Boordi itself

Museums are able to provide additional services:

-Headphones

-Wi-Fi connections (fixed or Mobile hotspots to rent)

-Mobile devices for rent, e.g. for customer without smart phones The other environments that

Boordi can be used in are e.g. Shopping malls, Galleries, Zoos

Technologies supported by Boordi.

NFC – (near field communications) a technology based on RFID and in common use of mobile payments. Most of the latest smart phones support NFC communication include iPhone6,Samsung  Galaxy S3 and above, HTC, Xperia, Motorola, Huawei, ZTE, LG, Nexus and others.

For using  Boordi with NFC all the user have to do is to put its phone 1-3 cm from the exhibit  tag/sticker.

Every time the user want to scan new NFC tag  he/her need just to put its phone near to the tag without starting any application.

When the phone get the tag information it will show the exhibit information in the phone browser automatically.

Using NFC tags do NOT require any software installation on the phone/tablet.

QR code- Using QR code the user scan the QR tag using the phone camera. All latest smart phones are capable of scanning QR codes. Like the NFC tag also the QR code is decoding some command action to the phone for  execution.

For using Boordi with QR code all the user need to do is open a camera application that can scan QR codes and focus of the QR tag with the camera from few centimetres distance.

Every time the user want to scan new QR code he/her need to start the camera scanning application first.  

When the phone gets the tag information it will show the exhibit information in the phone browser.

Using QR code require an application that able to scan such codes.

iBeacon – relatively a new technology introduced by Apple for indoor navigation and proximity advertisement. Beacons are low energy Bluetooth 4 devices that are spread all over the building/facility.

Beacons can be described like a light tower on the ground showing the boats the land sign. A Beacon have few numbers configured inside that it transmit every few milliseconds. Among the data the beacon transmit  is the Transmission Power (TX) that is in use for calculating the phone distance from the beacon and by that estimate the phone location in the building.

When working with beacons the user must have a dedicated application issued by the facility he visit for scanning the beacons in the facility and get the commands from the provision server for what need to be execute on the phone when a beacon discovered.

Beacons themselves are dummy and do not connect to any data network and like the tower light that just show light to boats its just advertise itself by broadcasting its data.

The phone application will send the beacon detail it found to the provision server. Provision server will calculate the user location and will know in what exhibition room the user is located. The provision server will tell the phone application what information page to show.

Beacon transmission range can be from few centimetres up to 50 meters. Accuracy is not great and can be infected by objects on the way (walls, people…). It will be hard use beacons to distinguish between two exhibits that are next to each others, but it can be very useful to track the users in the building knowing what hall are they, what are their route in the building, statistics collection and interactive communication with the visitors.

 

For using Boordi with beacons the visitor must have a dedicated Boordi application in the smart phone.

When entering or exiting a hall, floor or room an exhibits menu page will show up for all exhibits nearby.

Other notification and information can be given as real time notification coming from the provision server.
